Fighting for Justice: Bryan Stevenson and the Growth of Equal Justice Initiative (EJI)

The tireless efforts of Bryan Stevenson’s never ending dedication to social justice, led to the creation of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). The Equal Justice Initiative is a nonprofit organization which works to provide legal representation to those who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails or prisons. The book, “Just Mercy” written by Bryan Stevenson, expands more on this topic and the efforts that Bryan Stevenson took to take the next step in bringing justice to society.

Perseverance. From facing challenges like racism, to death threats, Stevenson remained dedicated to supporting these innocent people to prove their innocence. Despite coming across setbacks and disappointments, it’s important to keep trying, and Stevenson exemplifies just that. With his perseverance, he made deep connections with his clients, which in turn had a positive effect, and further motivated them.

Adaptability. Stevenson was willing to think outside the box in tough situations, underscored through his work at EJI. The organization is able to adapt to change, which is crucial to addressing new challenges and pursuing justice.

Founding an organization this large, means that Stevenson embodies a huge amount of commitment and dedication, adaptability, courage, integrity, and so much more. Through this process, Bryan Stevenson remained with a positive growth mindset. As an effective leader, he was open to constructive criticism, and new ideas and perspectives, constantly striving to find a better understanding of the problems he has witnessed. Stevenson’s willingness to learn from both successes and failures, has created his path to being a leader.

In the end, it all comes down to the heart and the purpose. Stevenson and his never ending empathy played a huge role in this act. With his sense of purpose to fight for justice, he was able to assist those who were going through poverty and racial discrimination, and the racial in-justices that affected them. He immersed himself in the experiences and lives of those individuals, while making connections, and inspiring them with a sense of hope and trust.

Stevenson is a role model in society, winning numerous awards, as well as receiving over 50 honorary doctoral degrees; the list just never seems to end. His work and courage are truly inspiring and empowering, and have been the change in society to bring forth equality. He has shown that individuals themselves can make a huge difference. Bryan Stevenson truly took the initiative.
